Abstract

Ujian-t sampel bebas menunjukkan bahawa skor penglibatan muzik responden lelaki (M = 3.75, SP = 1.01) lebih tinggi berbanding responden perempuan (M = 2.96, SP = 1.19), t(147) = 4.38, p < .001, d = 0.73.

This study examined the relationship between music engagement and emotion-regulation strategies among young adults in Sarawak, Malaysia. This cross-sectional survey included 149 respondents, recruited through purposive sampling, who completed an online questionnaire. The study instruments comprised the Music Engagement Styles (MES) scale and an Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) adapted to the context of music engagement. Descriptive findings indicated that respondents reported moderate to high levels of music engagement, with a descriptive tendency toward the use of cognitive reappraisal. An independent-samples t-test showed that male respondents reported higher music-engagement scores (M = 3.75, SD = 1.01) than female respondents (M = 2.96, SD = 1.19), t(147) = 4.38, p < .001, d = 0.73. Pearson’s correlation also indicated a very strong positive association between overall music engagement and emotion-regulation scores, r = .904, p < .001. However, given the cross-sectional design, purposive sampling, reliance on self-report measures, and possible content overlap between the MES and ERQ constructs, this correlation should be interpreted as an association within the study sample rather than as evidence of causality. Overall, the findings suggest that engagement with music may be associated with emotion-regulation strategies among young adults in Sarawak. Further research using more clearly differentiated construct measures, longitudinal or experimental designs, and more representative samples is needed before intervention implications can be established.
