Adolescent mental health is increasingly becoming a concerning issue worldwide, including in Muslim-majority countries such as Malaysia. The rising rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and psychosocial distress among adolescents demand more holistic intervention approaches. Although Western psychotherapeutic approaches have proven effective in addressing mental disorders, many of these interventions pay limited attention to religious and spiritual dimensions, which are essential elements in the lives of Muslim adolescents. This conceptual article discusses the concept of Islamic Art Therapy as an alternative and complementary approach in supporting the mental health of Muslim adolescents. The article further explains how the integration of Islamic visual arts such as Islamic geometry, calligraphy, Quranic reflection, and elements of tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the soul) can contribute to emotional regulation, self-awareness, psychological well-being, and adolescents’ spiritual development. The discussion also relates this approach to Imam al-Ghazali’s epistemology, which emphasizes the development of the soul through sensory, imaginative, intellectual, intuitive, and spiritual dimensions. In addition, this article discusses the implications of Islamic Art Therapy within school, community, and adolescent mental well-being development contexts, while suggesting that Islamic Art Therapy offers considerable potential as a more relevant intervention approach for Muslim adolescents.
