Abstract

Digital learning can be challenging for Deaf learners, particularly when content is presented in oral or written language that is complex. As in the case of skill-based learning like hand embroidery, visual methods have become even more important because the visual demonstration is not available; there is no structure with step-by-step instructions; and there is no designing using multimedia to reduce cognitive load. This conceptual paper suggests the visual-multimedia instructional design framework for creating the accessible digital hand embroidery learning environment for Deaf learners. This paper combines four domains: special education for Deaf learners, visual learning principles, multimedia design and cognitive load, and instructional design for skill-based learning in using a conceptual literature synthesis approach. The synthesis results in a structure that connects learner's needs, design principles, kit components and anticipated learning outcomes. The plan will involve visual embroidery guides, sign-language-centred instructional videos, learning modules that are structured, and guided practice activities. It enriches the inclusive education by extending the digital access in learning creative skills as well as providing a design reference for the development of future prototypes and usability assessment.
