RECONCEPTUALIZING AR-RIQAB AS A CATALYST FOR SOCIOECONOMIC JUSTICE: A CONTEMPORARY ANALYSIS OF ZAKAT DISTRIBUTION

Classical Islamic jurisprudence defines Ar-Riqab as the manumission of slaves, but in the modern era of the disappearance of literal slavery, there exists an application gap in contemporary Zakat distribution. In response to this problem, this study investigates the extension of the Ar-Riqab category in contemporary Fiqh and assesses its socioeconomic effect on today’s vulnerable populations. This study employed a qualitative research design. Classical Fiqh texts of the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanafi schools and contemporary fatwas issued by Malaysian State Islamic Religious Councils (MAIN) were subjected to content analysis. The thematic analysis reveals three main pillars of modern intervention, namely, (1) Ideological and Social Liberation, (2) Economic Empowerment through Productive Zakat, and (3) Institutional Protection against Human Trafficking. The findings show that a wider functional understanding of Ar-Riqab is very much in line with Maqasid al-Shariah.
