Abstract

The development of quality graduates requires higher education institutions to prepare students with capabilities that extend beyond academic knowledge. Although previous studies have examined various soft-skill dimensions, these capabilities are frequently investigated separately, limiting a comprehensive understanding of their contribution to graduate quality. This conceptual paper addresses this gap by proposing an integrated framework that conceptualises soft skills as comprising generic competencies, innovation ability and positive work attitudes. Drawing on Human Capital Theory, the framework positions these capabilities as forms of human capital developed through higher education and proposes that they contribute to graduate quality. Generic competencies support graduates’ ability to communicate, manage information and engage in lifelong learning; innovation ability supports critical thinking, problem-solving and the generation of new solutions; while positive work attitudes contribute to responsible, reliable and collaborative workplace behaviour. The novelty of the framework lies in integrating these cognitive, innovation-related and behavioural dimensions within a single conceptualisation of soft skills and linking them explicitly to graduate quality. The proposed framework provides a theoretical basis for future empirical testing and offers practical implications for curriculum design, graduate assessment, employability development and university–industry engagement.
