Abstract

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesan Pedagogi Responsif Budaya (PRB) terhadap motivasi dan penglibatan pelajar dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Tamil di sekolah kebangsaan Malaysia. PRB menekankan pentingnya mengintegrasikan elemen budaya pelajar ke dalam pengajaran untuk mewujudkan persekitaran pembelajaran yang inklusif dan relevan. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, melibatkan temu bual separa berstruktur dengan lima orang guru Bahasa Tamil di sekolah kebangsaan Pulau Pinang. Data juga dikumpulkan melalui pemerhatian kelas. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa integrasi elemen budaya seperti perayaan dan tradisi Tamil dalam pengajaran memberikan kesan positif terhadap motivasi dan penglibatan pelajar. Pelajar lebih berminat, aktif, dan berkeyakinan apabila budaya mereka diiktiraf dalam pengajaran. Walau bagaimanapun, kajian ini turut mengenal pasti beberapa cabaran utama dalam pelaksanaan PRB, termasuk kekurangan bahan pengajaran yang mencerminkan budaya pelajar, beban kerja tambahan untuk guru, serta kekurangan latihan formal. Oleh itu, kajian ini mencadangkan agar bahan pengajaran yang lebih relevan dan latihan formal yang lebih teratur disediakan untuk guru-guru. Sokongan daripada institusi pendidikan dan komuniti sekolah juga penting untuk memastikan pelaksanaan PRB yang berkesan, seterusnya meningkatkan motivasi dan penglibatan pelajar.

This study aims to analyze the impact of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) on student motivation and engagement in Tamil language learning at Malaysian national schools. CRP emphasizes the importance of integrating students’ cultural elements into teaching to create an inclusive and relevant learning environment. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with five Tamil language teachers from national schools in Penang. Data was also collected through classroom observations. The findings reveal that the integration of cultural elements, such as Tamil festivals and traditions, positively impacts student motivation and engagement. Students were more interested, active, and confident when their culture was recognized in the teaching process. However, several key challenges in implementing CRP were identified, including the lack of teaching materials reflecting students’ cultures, the additional workload for teachers, and insufficient formal training. Therefore, the study recommends providing more culturally relevant teaching materials and structured formal training for teachers. Support from educational institutions and school communities is also crucial to ensure the effective implementation of CRP, ultimately enhancing student motivation and engagement.
