Post-divorce parenting presents challenges in maintaining emotional stability, interaction and engagement of parent-child within the family. This study aims to explore the experiences of children from divorced families and examine sibling dynamics and father involvement in understanding the behavioral adjustment of adolescent and young adult children. The study focuses on siblings aged 13 to 30 years old living with their mother. A semi-structured interview method was employed, followed by thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes in participants’ experiences. Findings indicate that divorce impacts children’s emotional and psychological experiences, life challenges and changes in family structure and routines. Sibling relationships serve as an informal support system; despite tensions arising from conflict, siblings continue to hold expectations of cooperation and unity among one another. Post-divorce father involvement is varied and inconsistent, with limited emotional interaction. Nonetheless, children maintain expectations for fathers to act as role models, guides and be attentive to their needs. These findings underscore that the quality and meaningfulness of father-child interactions are more influential than the frequency of physical meetings in supporting children’s behavioral adjustment. The study contributes to a holistic understanding of post-divorce family interactions with theoretical implications for Family System Theory, Attachment Theory and the Double ABCX Model, as well as practical implications for strengthening father role and developing social support for children post-divorce.
