Abstract

The lack of stability and rapid degradation of bioactive components from plants is one of the problems encountered during the preparation of nutraceutical and pharmaceutical formulations. The plants Momordica charantia and Moringa oleifera demonstrate well-known antioxidative, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities; however, they are commonly characterized by a low level of stability and solubility. This research evaluates the possibility of co-encapsulation of extracts of M. charantia and M. oleifera via spray drying in order to increase stability, solubility, and controllable release of the bioactive compounds. The powders obtained were characterized by means of physicochemical characteristics and structural stability in order to evaluate the possibility of obtaining the stable product with a high content of bioactive compounds. In addition, this research evaluates the influence of various carrier materials on powder formation, encapsulation efficiency, and material properties. Preliminary results have shown that co-encapsulation was possible and resulted in the improvement of powder behavior, storability, and activity of bioactive compounds. The obtained data provide valuable information on the applicability of dual-extracts spray drying for co-encapsulation of extracts of plants and can serve as the basis for future research in order to optimize the process.
