Abstract

Speaking skills are component of Arabic language mastery, as they reflect a student's ability to use the language actively, accurately, and meaningfully in real-life communication situations. However, mastering skill remains a challenge in the context of Arabic language learning in Malaysia due to various linguistic, affective, pedagogical, and environmental factors that limit opportunities for authentic language use. Consequently, the communicative approach is viewed to potential method to enhance oral communication proficiency through learning that emphasizes interaction, collaboration, and active student engagement. This paper aims to identify the issues and challenges associated with mastering speaking skills, as well as the role of the communicative approach in improving the oral communication capabilities of Arabic language students in Malaysia. This study employs a qualitative approach through a library-based research design, using a narrative literature review to examine a range of academic sources related to Arabic speaking skills, the communicative approach, oral language learning strategies, motivation, and self-confidence. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes regarding the challenges of implementing the communicative approach and its implications for speaking skill mastery. The synthesis of literature reveals that weaknesses in vocabulary and grammar mastery, communication anxiety, a lack of authentic interaction opportunities, the dominance of teacher-centered instruction, and learning environment constraints are among the primary challenges hindering the development of Arabic speaking skills. The findings also indicate that implementing the communicative approach plays a crucial role in enhancing speaking fluency, self-confidence, motivation, and active engagement, while enabling students to use Arabic more meaningfully in real-life communication contexts. This paper contributes to strengthening Arabic language pedagogical practices by providing a conceptual foundation and practical implications for empowering the implementation of the communicative approach in teaching speaking skills, thereby supporting the development of more effective student communication competence.
