Abstract

Addressing climate change requires public action that is active and impactful. Public engagement in combating climate change occurs at multiple levels of impact, especially in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These efforts include personal lifestyle changes, such as reducing energy consumption and using public transportation, as well as community initiatives like local clean-up activities and promoting sustainable practices, which can ultimately lead to broader systemic changes. They can be categorised into low-impact, moderate-impact and high-impact climate actions. Given the significant impact of daily activities on climate change, the public can greatly influence mitigation efforts. At present, studies on public climate action initiatives in Southeast Asian countries are limited. This study, therefore, employs a systematic review of 17 published articles from Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed journals, using ROSES technique, to explore the climate actions taken by the Southeast Asian public, categorised into three main categories. The findings indicate that the public in Southeast Asia participates in all categories of climate actions. They significantly practice moderate-impact actions but have minimal involvement in high-impact actions. They could play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as they can bring effective climate change mitigation at both the individual and community levels. Lastly, this review will recommend future avenues of research for scholars.
