Limited digital literacy is an empirically confirmed barrier for adopting digital zakat, whereas technophobia constitutes a probable psychological barrier that has not been sufficiently investigated in relation to digital zakat. These factors are especially important for digital zakat websites since users need to combine their technological, financial, and religious skills. The aim of this narrative review is to provide synthesis of the literature on the adoption of digital zakat, digital literacy, technophobia, usability, accessibility, security, trust, website design, and institutional context. The literature review shows that there are existing connections between digital zakat adoption and digital literacy, facilitating conditions, trust, system quality, and information quality. There are also existing connections between technophobia and lower perceived ease of use and digital media literacy in other digital settings. As a result of the synthesis, the following potential barriers have been identified: navigation complexity, lack of guidance on how to perform procedures, problems with error recovery, security concerns, and mistrust toward institutions. The following design implications have been identified: simplified navigation, contextual guidance, design for accessibility, education of users, security information, and error recovery. However, the connection between the above-mentioned design interventions and website-level usability and technophobia has not been sufficiently researched empirically. Therefore, future research needs to experimentally validate interventions at the website level using diverse samples of users with limited digital literacy and non-users.
